He started “JM English Hotel” an exclusive continental hotel serving the European clientele who were the rulers during the British Raj. The original bakers came from the British household where the bakery recipes were a close-guarded secret. During the 50s, his son Joseph joined the father’s family business. He expanded the Bakery & Hotel to such a level that JM became a household name & official caterer to the Government of Tamil Nadu, TNAU, Doctors & Industry fraternity.
The advent of fresh yeast revolutionized the bakery business. Joseph Lawrence – son of Joseph, the 3rd generation baker joined the family business. Mr.Geroge Mudiappa, Brother of Mr. Joseph who was in Germany helped the young Lawrence to learn German bread making methods & confectionery technology from Luzern, Switzerland.
Today, as per the family tradition, Ashok Andrew the eldest son of Lawrence joined his father in managing the Bakery as the 4th generation baker. Today, JM Breads caters to several hospitals, educational institutions, movie houses & JM Cake shops.

Once upon a time, there was a tailor in Coimbatore named S.Mudiappa Chettiar. His specialty was European ladies tailoring . He had 100 tailors under his command. In order to cater to his European clients he started a bakery in the name “Glad Well & Company”. Later it was named as JM English Bakery. “JM” stand for his beloved wife “Jabamalai Mary”. He started the bakery in such a time in India when Bread was considered sick man’s food . Initially, there were no takers for his bread. But the 2nd World war turned the tide in his favor. He became the official supplier to the Armed forces during 1935.
